Working in Spain - Public Transport Costa del Sol

Public Transport Costa del Sol

Information about getting around the Costa del Sol on public transport and in particular, to and from the Obelisk offices is essential when starting a new job in Spain. The following is a guide to buses and trains on the Costa del Sol.

Buses

Many people working in Spain use bus transport to get to their job in Spain and to the Obelisk offices. Local bus transport along the Costa del Sol between Estepona and Malaga is run by the Portillo company and timetables and price information can be found in English on http://www.ctsa-portillo.com/. Buses can get very busy, particularly during the summer months when delays are common.

Estepona - Marbella: Regular buses (every 20-25 minutes on weekdays) run between Estepona and Marbella with numerous stops along the A-7 dual carriageway (e.g. Cancelada, San Pedro and Nueva Andalucia). This bus stops within a few minutes' walk of the Obelisk offices. The journey from Estepona takes between 40 minutes to one hour.

Fuengirola - Marbella: Regular buses (every 25 minutes on weekdays) run between Fuengirola and Marbella with numerous stops along the A-7 dual carriageway (e.g. La Cala, Calahonda and Elviria). This bus stops within a few minutes' walk of the Obelisk offices. The journey from Fuengirola takes 1 hour 15 minutes, around 40 minutes from La Cala and 30 minutes from Calahonda.

Marbella City: Marbella has a good city bus service and there are 11 lines covering most areas of the town. Tickets cost €1.15 or €0.80 if you have a bonobús (season ticket), available from Marbella bus station.

Marbella - Malaga Airport: Buses connect Marbella bus station to Malaga Airport. The journey takes 45 minutes. Buses from Marbella run from 5.30am to 10.15pm and buses run from the airport from 6.15am to 11pm.

Trains

Travelling to work in Spain by train is not easy as the Costa del Sol's only train line currently only runs between Malaga city centre and Fuengirola. The train stops at numerous places along the way including Malaga airport, Torremolinos and Benalmadena. Trains leave every 30 minutes from 6am to 11pm and the journey takes between 45 and 50 minutes. Information on timetables and prices is available in English from http://www.renfe.es/ (go to Cercanías).

The train line will eventually be extended as far as Estepona with the first stage of the new line from Fuengirola to Marbella expected during 2012. This development will be an added advantage to jobs in Spain.
