Working Abroad - Paperwork Needed in Spain
Official Paperwork Needed when Working in Spain
One of the first steps when working abroad is official paperwork and below is a list of the key procedures you need to go through when you first arrive at your recruitment in Spain.
As part of the Obelisk commitment to helping you make a good start to your career in Spain, the H.R. Department is happy to assist you with any of the below.
N.I.E Number
Your first step to working in Spain should be to obtain an N.I.E. number (número de identificación de extranjeros - the Spanish form of tax identification for foreigners in Spain). This number is essential for many things including a work contract for recruitment abroad in Spain. To obtain the N.I.E. number, you first need to fill out an application form. Obelisk can provide you with a form and help you fill it out or you can download one (http://www.mir.es/SGACAVT/modelos/extranjeria/modelos_extranje/ex_14.pdf)
You then take the form to a National Police Station. You should arrive early (between 7am and 7.30am) and join the queue. At 8.30am numbered tickets are handed out (only a certain number are allocated every day) and at 9am applications are dealt with in order of the numbered tickets. Obviously, the higher the number on your ticket, the longer you will have to wait.
When it is your turn, you hand in your completed application form and a photocopy of your passport (you must also bring the original). You are given a receipt and when you are advised by the police station that your number is ready, you go along to collect it.
National Police Stations are located in:
Fuengirola - Avda. Condes de San Isidro 98 (click here for map).
Marbella - Avda. Arias de Velasco 25 (click here for map).
Social Security Number
All employees who work in Spain must make contributions to the Spanish social security system. Obelisk makes these contributions on your behalf, just as UK companies do. In order to do this, you must obtain a social security number from a local social security office. This is a straightforward procedure whereby you take a photocopy of your passport and the original copy of your N.I.E. number. Your social security number is issued immediately.
Social Security Offices are located in:
Benalmadena - Avda. de Andalucia 17-19 (click here for map)
Estepona - Avda. de Andalucia 46 (click here for map)
Fuengirola - C/ Dr Garcia Verdugo (click here for map)
Marbella - Avda. de Antonio Belon within easy reach of Obelisk offices - (click here for map)
Opening hours are 9am to 2pm, Monday to Friday.
Employment Card
So that we can issue you with your contract for your career in Spain, you need to apply for an Employment Card (tarjeta de demanda de empleo), which proves that you are looking for work in Spain. The card is obtained from local employment offices (called Servicio Andaluz de Empleo) by presenting your passport and N.I.E. Offices are open Monday to Friday 9am to 2pm and situated at:
Benalmadena - C/ Las Flores (click here for map)
Estepona - Avda. Andalucia, Edif. Maestranza (click here for map)
Fuengirola - Avda. Miramar 33, Edif. Miramar II (click here for map)
Marbella - Avda. Arias de Velasco, Las Palmeras 2 (click here for map)
Town Council Registration
When working in Spain, it is not compulsory to register with the town council as resident (empadronamiento - similar to registering on the electoral roll in the UK), but it is useful to do so. If you wish your children to go to Spanish state schools or want to take advantage of any council-run local activities, you must be registered with the council as resident in the locality. To register you must go along to the town hall (ayuntamiento) with your passport and proof you live in the area, e.g. title deeds of a property or rental contract. Town halls are usually open Monday to Friday 9am to 2pm and you should go to the office called the ‘Padrón'.
